Meta Unveils New AI App as Zuckerberg Discusses Innovations With Microsoft's Nadella at Developer Conference

MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) — To stand out among the many players in the artificial intelligence market, Meta Platforms has introduced an independent AI application featuring social media elements designed to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The Meta AI application, developed using the firm’s Llama 4 artificial intelligence platform, features a "discovery" feed enabling users to observe how others engage with AI technologies. Additionally, it incorporates a vocal interaction mode for communicating with the AI.

"It makes sense for Meta to distinguish its rival to ChatGPT by leveraging the company’s background in social media. Think of the app’s Discover feed as an updated take on the original Facebook News Feed, solely concentrating on AI applications," explained Forrester research director Mike Proulx.

By enabling users to connect their Facebook and Instagram accounts, the Meta AI application "gains an advantage in quickly customizing its user experience using social media context."

Zuckerberg acknowledged the significant "buzz" surrounding AI and stated, “If these advancements result in substantial boosts in productivity, we should see corresponding growths in GDP.”

“It will take several years, even decades, to unfold,” Zuckerberg stated. “Can you share your thoughts on what we should monitor to gauge the advancements being made here?”

Nadella mentioned the introduction of electricity, stating that "AI holds potential, but we must ensure it brings about genuine improvements in productivity—this necessitates both software development and managerial adjustments, correct? After all, people need to interact with AI in new ways."

He mentioned that it took 50 years for individuals to realize they needed to alter factory operations using electricity.

Zuckerberg responded with, "Well, we're all putting our bets on this not taking 50 years, so let's hope it doesn't."
