Progressive issued the subsequent statement regarding his death:
The Progressive Corporation along with our broader Progressive family is deeply saddened by the passing of former CEO and chairman of the board, Glenn Renwick, who died on Friday, May 16, at the age of 69.
Throughout his impressive 32-year tenure at Progressive, where he spent half his time as CEO, Glenn had an enormous impact both on the company under his guidance and on everyone who worked alongside him. His strong ethics, exceptional leadership abilities, sharp business sense, and pioneering mindset were pivotal during this stretch. From the year Glenn joined—when the annual revenue stood around $750 million—to just before his retirement, those earnings surged to almost $27 billion. This significant growth occurred over three decades marked by his stewardship.
He often reiterated that his final ambition was to make Progressive the premier selection for auto insurance among U.S. consumers. Following his resignation from the role of CEO in 2016, the organization sustained its impressive expansion under the guidance of his designated replacement, Tricia Griffith.
Tricia mentioned in an internal company message that Glenn made significant contributions to Progressive. However, when reflecting on his work, what stands out most is his dedication to their core values," she stated. "He exemplified these principles, integrating them into his daily life with full intent." Tricia continued, "Not only was Glenn an outstanding leader, but his sole ambition was always to improve Progressive from how he initially encountered it. Undoubtedly, he achieved this objective.
Our sincere sympathies go out to Glenn’s family and friends, numerous individuals who keep his legacy alive within the organization.
