Denzel Washington Surprises Crowds: Honored with Prestigious Palme d'Or at Cannes

CANNES, France (Wiseova) – On Monday evening, U.S. actor Denzel Washington was presented with an unexpected honorary Palme d'Or accolade at the Cannes Film Festival as acknowledged by festival organizers for his remarkable body of work throughout his career.

In southern France, 70-year-old Washington attended the debut of American director Spike Lee's newest movie, "Highest 2 Lowest." This film is based on the renowned Japanese director Akira Kurosawa’s work titled "High and Low," which similarly had its opening night on Monday.

On the red carpet alongside co-stars A$AP Rocky and Jeffrey Wright, Washington plays David King in this crime thriller, marking their fifth collaboration with director Lee.

The actor, who has won two Academy Awards, has taken on various roles including that of the black activist Malcolm X and a courageous yet alcoholic airline pilot in "Flight." He received his second Oscar in 2002 for his performance as an unscrupulous police officer in "Training Day," which came after he initially claimed the award in 1990 for his part in "Glory."

In addition, he took both directing and acting roles for the 2007 movie "The Great Debaters," which centers around a professor at an African American college who leads his debate team to significant success. He was also involved as a producer and lead actor in the drama titled "Antwone Fisher."

Last week, during the opening ceremony of the film festival, Robert De Niro was honored with an esteemed Palme d'Or special award recognizing his lifelong contributions to cinema. In anticipation of this accolade, he seized the opportunity in his acceptance speech to advocate for demonstrations against then-U.S. President Donald Trump.

Set for release in the United States on August 22, "Highest 2 Lowest" is poised to make its theatrical debut.
