Atlanta Business Owners Struggle as Midtown Construction Disrupts Daily Life

Several business proprietors in Midtown mention they're facing challenges since a construction project began in the vicinity.

The construction at the 1072 West Peachtree site, situated at the intersection of 12th Street and West Peachtree Street Northwest, has resulted in occasional road closures.

Several business proprietors mention that both pedestrian and vehicular traffic have noticeably dropped off since the commencement of the construction work.

Tajuansar Diallo, who owns Soak and Polish, states that the construction has affected both the ambiance of her salon and her profits.

"To have employees you can't compensate properly—that’s painful. In my seven years here, I've never faced that issue," explained Diallo.

Erica Williams, who owns Boozie Smoothies, expressed comparable views on Sunday evening.

"If it weren't for DoorDash or Uber Eats, we'd barely be getting by at this point," stated Williams.

People living on the street, such as James Turner, believe that the reduction in pedestrian activity has been beneficial for them.

"Noone visits this place nowadays, which I quite enjoy. Particularly these shops around here—they likely see absolutely no visitors. However, with me residing here, it doesn't bother me in the slightest," clarified Turner.

According to the Rockefeller Group's website, the development project managed by the Rockefeller Group and carried out by Turner Construction is slated for completion by spring 2026.

Turner Construction Company issued the subsequent statement addressing the construction issues:

We think that the way we construct something holds equal importance to what we're constructing. Our focus lies heavily on the neighborhoods where we operate, aiming for safety and success among those who live nearby. During this particular project, an entrepreneur reached out expressing worries over how our building activities were affecting her enterprise. In response, we had direct discussions with her to grasp her issues thoroughly and provided substantial backing such as aiding in promoting her venture and linking her to developmental services for businesses. Although she hasn’t accepted our propositions yet, we continue to stay available and prepared to assist.

We keep up consistent dialogue with nearby property management groups and actively work to reduce disturbances caused by construction. So far, this is the sole concern we have received from any business.

For more than five decades, Turner has steadfastly been an integral part of the Atlanta community, and we continue to be firmly dedicated to sustaining our enduring presence here for future generations through listening, support, and collaborative efforts aimed at fortifying the communities we contribute to building."

The real estate company RADCO, which manages the property occupied by Boozie Smoothies and Soak and Polish, expressed comparable views.

The construction firm has maintained open lines of communication regarding possible disturbances, and we relay this information to both our residential and business renters. While nobody enjoys the construction process, it’s an inevitable aspect of urban life and work. Upon completion of the project, our commercial tenants can expect a larger customer base.
