Hacked Crosswalks in the Bay Area Impersonate Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg

Multiple communities in the Bay Area experienced compromised traffic lights over the weekend.

Clips uploaded onto TikTok during the weekend feature audio messages that pedestrians heard soon after pressing the crosswalk signal buttons. These recorded voices allegedly belong to Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.

Residents of Palo Alto shared clips with an audio recording purportedly belonging to Musk. One recording He said, "Hello, this is Elon Musk. Welcome to Palo Alto, where Tesla Engineering resides. As you know, people often say wealth doesn’t guarantee joy, but still..."

Another recording A post from someone in Palo Alto depicts a crosswalk with the message, "Hey, this is Elon. Could we become buddies? Will you be my buddy? I’ll offer you a Cybertruck, I swear."

The two recordings captured in Palo Alto both took place on University Avenue. We reached out to the municipality yet have not received a response.

Videos Additionally, they recorded voices at the crosswalks in Menlo Park close to El Camino Real and near the Meta campus. The person speaking pretended to be Zuckerberg and stated, “Hey, I’m Mark Zuckerberg, though everyone knows me as the Zuck. It’s perfectly natural to feel uneasy or perhaps invaded when we push AI into all aspects of your daily life.”

Redwood City told the San Francisco Chronicle That four of its crosswalks were affected and have since been deactivated.

"We would like to emphasize that altering city infrastructure, such as crosswalk signals, is both illegal and hazardous," said Deputy City Manager Jennifer Yamaguma to the Chronicle.
