Planning Board Urges Annexation of Nearly 500 Acres in Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The City of Amarillo’s Planning & Zoning Commission has endorsed the annexation of approximately 500 acres of land in Randall County.

The board has just begun this process, with the initial suggestion set to go before the city council.

"That's exactly what we did today—we made the recommendation that it's prepared to be submitted to the council. We informed them about our feedback, thoughts, and all related matters so they have a comprehensive understanding as it has passed through our hands," explained Jason Ault, who serves as the board chairman for the planning & zoning commission of the City of Amarillo.

The municipal employees analyzed the roughly 500-acre parcel of unincorporated territory situated close to I-27 and Sundown Lane, which is now within the city boundaries.

They talked about developing the land for new homes and businesses, along with KidsInc.'s involvement, however, the board mentioned that everything hinges on the modifications that occur during this procedure.

The chairman of the board stressed that the matter should be presented to the commission initially, prior to being brought before the city council at the beginning of the procedure.

"It promotes transparency and ensures that various people review it, taking the pressure off just the council and the mayor to examine it. The commission, which will handle future revisions, will have already looked over it," explained Ault.

This marks the initial public gathering where this issue has been presented to the commission. Further reviews will take place, allowing individuals to provide feedback and suggest potential amendments to the zoning regulations throughout the proceedings.

During the Amarillo City Council session scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, city personnel will unveil this proposal to the council and provide the suggestions put forth earlier today.

The second reading is scheduled for June 10, with final approval expected towards the latter part of June.
